Real Estate Agent or REALTOR®?

A Real Estate Agent is someone who holds a real estate license and may assist others in selling, buying and managing real estate. They must have their license held by a Real Estate Broker licensed in their state of business. In other words the difference between the two is that Agents can't work without a Broker and can not deal with Trust Accounts (also known as "earnest money"). The Broker license requires more schooling.

Some Agents have a Broker licenses, but still choose to work under another Broker's license instead of opening their own business.

Most people don't know that a lot of Real Estate Agents are not REALTORS. To be a REALTOR in the State of Wisconsin one most belong to the National Association of REALTORS and the Wisconsin Board of REALTORS both of which holds REALTORS to a high standard of ethics. One is not automatically a REALTOR when they become a Real Estate Agent. The rules for each position are structured differently and the reprimand procedures vary between the two postions. One must take additional steps to earn the title of REALTOR after they have obtained their basic real estate license.
